Nenshi’s leadership of the NDP has both pros and cons

By Lethbridge Herald on July 13, 2024.

Editor:

With Nenshi now ruling the NDP, I think of the good, the bad and the ugly.  The good is that the extreme socialist element will no longer influence party. The bad is that we now have a liberal lead Opposition. The ugly is that Nenshi will actually have to do something. What are his plans to reduce personal and business taxes and fees? Reduce government spending and the debt. How will he balance the budget, deliver innovative education and healthcare without throwing money at the problem, reducing crime and provide affordable housing. Sounds like a lot, but that’s what the UCP are dealing with.  Will he reimpose a carbon tax? Does he really plan to reinstate drug consumption sites? While hatred may be Nenshi\’s mantra, I will vote for hard policies that deal with real world issues, not personal feelings or ambitions.

Nenshi reminds me of the wolf standing at the podium in front of the flock of sheep, promises to become a vegetarian if elected. Calgary is a mess. His legacy.

Southern Albertan

We know of, many, former hard-core right wing voters in the millennial age group, who, when Nenshi entered the AB NDP leadership race, immediately bought NDP memberships and supported Nenshi. Perhaps, there is the longing for the once progressive conservatism of yore here in Alberta.
At this point, it appears, to many of us, that no matter what is the AB NDP now, it is looking way better than the authoritarian Smith/Parker UCP/TBA.
We shall see.

Fedup Conservative

The former conservative supporters in my world have all been supporting the NDP since Klein took office they weren’t dumb enough to support him and Klein’s own daughter Angie was encouraging us to do so she was so disgusted by what her father was doing to us.
When Ralph was running to become premier his own mother Flo told my mother that she didn’t think he was capable of running this province properly. Mum told her no one in her family was going to support him and mum said Flo wasn’t surprised.

ReallyReally

Tom can you explain to us how any government formed by any political party can reduce government spending, while yet again reducing taxes and fees, and balance a budget ? (While apparently stimulating the economy and resolving a plethora of issues plaguing our failing public institutions) What does your spreadsheet look like ? Truly … paint us a picture please.

Cutting royalties and taxes for the rich is what put us in this horrible mess and no other oil rich area in the world is in it, they are all rich.

ReallyReally

Yep, plus they reduced the forestry stumpage royalties to ridiculously low levels further accelerating the wealth of the province and creating even less diversity of income for our economy. Financial wizards the Cons are NOT! Corrupt corporate allies they ARE. Brainwashing P.R. savvy they ARE; they know their supporting audience well, both corporate and electoral tribe. And their base is wilfully accepting of their brainwashing rhetoric — talk about addicts ! Klein and Smith — media savvy skills are the KEY to their popularity. Snake oil salespeople. Alberta is being raped and ruined by their ongoing manipulations. What a freaking shame.

ReallyReally

Oops… “further accelerating the wealth of the province” should have been “further accelerating the decline of the wealth” — I type “two-finger hesitant” method and that causes more typos, and when I originally corrected a mistake I deleted too many words. Admittedly I am not a wizard at typing, but I wasn’t sleeping at my desk for those who might jump to that conclusion. Chuckle.

Yep and Rachel and her crew campaigned on it, reviewed it for nine months and changed nothing. Don’t be such a one side goof Allan.

Once again no one believes your ignorant comments, yet you aren’t smart enough to stop spreading them are you? I lived next door to a lawyer for 11 years and during my career dealt with hundreds of different lawyers and since retiring spent many years having morning, week day, coffee with three other ones and some of my friends have relatives who are lawyers, my oldest grandson is training to become one.
If there was anything I learned from them it was “Don’t ever hurl sarcastic comments spreading lies against anyone without having true facts to prove you are right and repeating the lies that these Reformers are feeding you could get you into serious financial trouble if someone decides to take you to court because of what they have done to their family. Putting a family members life at risk and then praising them for doing it is asking for trouble, why wouldn’t it? You have no idea who is out there who may want to get even with you, was what I was taught.
We have seen several stupid comments about Notley wasting $80 billion of taxpayers money without any proof she did and we know it came from Jason Kennney and the financial statements we have seen prove she didn’t so why would anyone be dumb enough to repeat this lie , when it’s against a lawyer? I doubt she would sue you but she has a lot of lawyer friends who might and it would be impossible to for to defend a lie, so why put yourself in that situation in the first place?
I would you stop trying to spread your brand of stupidity before someone makes you try to prove it in court, don’t you think?

Yet, you spread them generously. Stupid seniors, idiots, dumb, ignorant, fools, mindless, etc., ad nauseam

Yet my senior friends all state it. You can call a thousand seniors stupid and the only ones who be offended are the stupid ones, the rest know you don’t mean them and they know who you do mean. So why are you so offended with what I say and why don’t the intelligent people not agree with what you write? Could it be that I’m right?

I wonder why Albertans are so easy to fool with the lie that we don’t have a Revenue Problem we have a Spending Problem when our spending is on pare with other provinces? Those of us from the world of finance aren’t that stupid.
We have a massive Revenue Problem as lawyers economists, accountants, oilmen, bankers the former Conservative MLAs that I knew talked about and it was all started by Liberal turned Reformer Ralph Klein.
Not only were they furious with him for creating it they were disgusted with the ignorant Albertans who were fooled by his lies and nothing has changed and anyone who isn’t as dumb as them get sarcastic remarks hurled at them for trying to put a stop to it. Klein’s own family members knew it were also disgusted with him for creating it.
As long as these fools keep supporting these Reformers it is not going to change and more and more people will their lives put at risk by a inadequate health care system and more will need Food Bank help that we can’t afford to continue to provide.

It the idiots who don’t agree with me would like to try to prove me wrong in court I know some lawyers who would be more than willing to let them try. They know who created this mess, why wouldn’t they?

Rachael Notley knew we had to get our revenues back up to Lougheed’s level if we were going to get out this Horrific Mess as Lougheed called it and that was her game plan and true conservatives knew she was right and the oil industry crash of 2014 destroyed it for her.
The former conservative and social credit MLAs that I knew , knew that this is what created the mess we are in ,created by Liberal turned Reformer Ralph Klein and the idiots who blindly supported him, isn’t it?
“ Royalties Down 32% Billions in Federal Revenue”

Then as Accountants state add in billions more lost from cutting Lougheed’s corporate taxes from a progressive system at a high of 16 % to a pathetic 8% and oilmen state add in billions more from the loss of natural gas royalties and we feel Albertans have been so stupid they have been screwed out of about a trillion dollars.

Of course then there is the orphan oil well cleanup mess Klein created and which one of idiots would like to be first to try to prove me wrong in court?
While you believed the Reform Party lie that Rachael Notley wasted billions of taxpayers money while in office , the Financial Statement that this former Royal Bank Manager saw proved it dead wrong and you would look like a damn fool in court trying to prove otherwise wouldn’t you?

I have had some of these mindless fellow seniors accuse me of threatening them with lawsuits and that’s ridiculous I never have. I enjoy watching them make fools of themselves and I encourage it, but I have certainly warned them about others doing it and I think from comments we are hearing they better wake up and think about it, don’t you? There are a lot of Albertans being hurt by what these Reformers are doing to them.
