Climate action rebate an ill-considered idea by the federal Conservatives

By Lethbridge Herald on October 12, 2024.

Editor:

I received a flyer from our Lethbridge MP, Rachael Thomas, saying she intends to cancel the climate action rebate for our family. This is a reduction to our annual income of $1,350 per year. This money is an important contribution to our family budget and it’s ill-considered of the Conservative party to want to deprive families of these funds, funds that help pay for things like groceries, whose costs keep rising due to the effects of the climate crisis.

The flyer also made a false claim that the federal government overcharges Canadians on their natural gas bills, when Ms. Thomas knows full well the carbon tax applies to the entire bill, not just the gas consumed part. About that tax, even after deducting it from our rebate, we are left with $1,200 to spend on the rest of our budget. We achieve that by cutting down on buying carbon, which is only logical.

Beyond cutting our income, however, the Conservative policy of doing nothing about climate change is a real threat to affordability. The insurance industry just reported climate disaster payouts of a record $7B in Canada for 2024. At this pace, insurance rates for Canadians will soon be unaffordable. The ability to get insurance at all is threatened. That’s just one example of the impacts on living expenses a short-sighted approach has. I urge Ms. Thomas to reconsider her plan to make life more expensive for Canadians.

Eliminate the Rebate!

Put more into the pockets of the rich!

Ideology before science!

… just channeling my inner Orwell.

…and don’t forget, increasing weather extremes will negatively impact food production , the result being? Increased costs passed down to the consumer.

Getting a taxpayer funded rebate for that brand spanking new electric vehicle not enough?? That’s on top of that Carbon rebate. Just how much should the rest of us support you?

I understand that Tom has become fabulously wealthy by lowering his emissions that benefit us all.

To compensate, we should direct more subsidies to the oil and coal industries. Poor things.

And you? How fabulously wealthy have you become without government support. Do you have yours?? Probably,so screw every one else with ridiculous virtue signalling that accomplishes nothing. Just a start.

Folks who keep blowing big bucks on robust carbon burning are supporting the rest of us plenty. No need to do anything more if your goal is enriching your neighbours.

Fedup Conservative

While Poilievre whines about the high cost of living it’s a well known fact that it was the COVID pandemic that created it around the world. Yet this guy is so stupid he wants to eliminate the Carbon Tax Rebates that are helping people who desperately need it put some money in their pockets while he ignores the fact that 27 countries have adopted the and know it works.
