Threatening a tariff could backfire on the U.S.

By Lethbridge Herald on December 14, 2024.

Editor:
Mr. Trump don’t count your chickens before they hatch by threatening Canada and Mexico over the 25 percent tariff on goods from these countries. This is like a slap on the face that could backfire on you too, and the former NAFTA agreement that Trump revised and called USMCA according to his liking. These countries could apply tariffs on the US and end up in a tariff war. The USA can never operate on their own but will have to depend on other countries. We need the USA, and they need us as we need China, and they need us for international trade. If Trump hopes USA to become a nation depending solely on “Buy American” goods it will take more than four years to make this happen.

During the last election President Biden won but Trump could not swallow his pride and insisted that the state of Georgia was his after a recount. Chaos the January 6th incident in Washington, DC could have mushroomed into a civil war. USA is based on a civil war between the north and the south.

This is why the NRA still controls the country and not the government. Trump jokingly suggested Canada should join the US to become their 51st State since Canada cannot keep its defense spending up to par with NATO. The US have trillions of dollars in their deficit while Canada is still lower with only millions in its deficit. Perhaps USA should join Canada instead.

The only thing that I appreciate of Donald Trump is that he is against abortion and give him a plus for this.

President-elect Donald Trump should learn from his mistakes and not be pushy about getting his own way all the time. Only dictators survive for a while, but in the end must depart as in the case of Assad when rebel groups took over Syria recently after 50 years of dictatorship.

Really only three things need to be done. Secure our border, reduce fentanyl exports (see Falkland BC) and stop being a dead beat at NATO expecting the U.S. to pick up the slack.

SophieR

Or, leave the border virtue-signalling to Homeland Security, drop NATO and contain the failed state below us with an alliance with Cuba, and let Trump’s tarriff on Fentanol make it unaffordable. Easy!

buckwheat

So you make it about Trump when our border leaks, fentanyl is made in Canada and shipped to the U.S., and we are laggards at NATO. At NATO we are one of 9 deadbeats left. And you’re just fine with that. Ok.

SophieR

And to add to biff’s prescient post, NATO has lost all its imperial wars – Yugoslavia, Libya and Iraq. And then had its finger in the cause of Ukraine’s conflict, the outcome tbd. Trump is right to think they are losers.

Or, to use your oft presented defence of climate denial, ‘oh, but we’re only 0.5 percent of the population … What does it matter?’

Besides, where is the money to come from? You seem to gnash your teeth about that often enough. Why the open wallet now?

As for drugs. Can’t the Americans make there own and leave our border out of it?

biff

usa is not picking up any slack when it comes to nato/military. they are keen to spend on arms, foremost because it lines so very many pockets, and deeply; also, it allows them to ensure they can help support the multinational party contributors, whilst bringing to power some of the planet’s worst human rights abusers such that they can “legally” purport to speak for the people of their land. in turn, the longtime litany of such thugs the usa snugs up in bed with are able to “legally” able to allow global corps to steal, pillage, plunder and poison the land, and undermine the cultures and economies of the thug puppets, all in the name of globalism. the circle is completed via big ceo money, money kicked back to american politicians and parties, and, lastly, share prices, each sold to the public as strong economic data.

Well said Paul. He may get a big surprise. Of course these Reformers like Daniele Smith and Pierre Poilievre who have been so heavily supportive of their American Republican pals have no intention of doing anything to counter act what he plans. They have even suggested that we should all have the right to bear arms just like the Americans and don’t are about all the gun violence we have seen in the U.S.

If I heard and remember, correctly, Andrew Coyne on CBC’s At Issue panel re: Trump and his proposed 25% tariff-gate, mentioned that Trump is a psychopath who makes mistakes. Surprisingly, though, Trump is talking about getting rid of Daylight Savings Time. The push is on now with keeping permanent standard time, not permanent daylight savings time. If Trump does anything right, it would be to facilitate permanent standard time. As with anything with Trump, we shall see.

Unfortunately Coyne has gone off the rails, ever look at his x account

BigBrit

Coyne is one of the few journalists whose writings stand the test of time. You may not agree with him on some points , but at least in the Globe , his penmanship is remarkable. His take on Trump aligns perfectly with most, who see the latter as an undesirable bombastic and dangerous leader. His take on using standard time is however right on.

lumpy

You had me ’til abortion.

old school

Bit of a correction- canadas deficit is 40 billion. Freeland is adding to it everyday . Blink and a million more.

Fedup Conservative

Just to prove how ignorant you are. While you whine about $40 billion at the federal level Albertas debt is $84 billion and grew by $8 billion in the past month. Can you tell us where your Reform Party pals wasted it while they continue to give away our oil and corporate taxes and cheat Albertans out of billions more?
How about Googling this : “Alberta Debt Clock”so you won’t look so ignorant. Add that to the $260 billion and you can see why the true conservatives are so fed up with you fools who have allowed this to happen, can’t you?

biff

if only we could become not just a 51st state, but 60 states and 3 territory states. how awesome would that be?! heck, we could support the american love of forced birth and put an end to the murder of fetuses that one day would become real people. why should women have a right to say about their body? ok, maybe if eve did not force adam to eat an apple he would not have eaten had eve not made him eat it…but, no, the bible says eve did bad and all women have to pay that price whereby the 10 commandments note she is a possession, just like husbanded animals.
but, ladies, do not despair, because when it comes to ownership over one’s body, it all defaults to the same owner of us each – govt.

Fedup Conservative

While the conservatives under Lougheed and Getty collected proper oil royalties and corporate taxes and funded our Health care and Education systems properly along with our municipalities to keep our property taxes in line these Reformers are only interested in looking after the rich, themselves and their Reform Party pals like we have seen them do.

Southern Albertan

In all of this though are the wannabes, i.e. those who are not the rich, but those who admire it and desire it, but will never achieve it. Included in this is the pride of maintaining the redneck persona, and the blind, dogged, calvinist, capitalist crowd. It must be a good feeling even not being kissed while it’s happening.

Fedup Conservative

With Alberta producing twice as much oil as Alaska and Norway combined it isn’t hard to understand what these fools have lost, taking us with them. My parents were heavily involved with Lougheed and knew that his plan was to build up a huge savings account and then start paying out annual oil dividend cheques like they are doing in Alaska. In fact dad said that it was from Lougheed where they got the idea to do it. While they have $80billion in their Alaska Permanent Trust Account and every man, woman and child has received $52,000.in total annual oil dividend cheques Albertans have $21 billion in theirs, a $84 billion debt and a $260 billion oil well cleanup mess and somehow they think if they ignore the truth it will all go away that’s how stupid they are. A lot of young Albertans including family members are furious with these ignorant seniors who are too stupid to understand it. One young university student told me that it has created such a disaster in his family that his four grandparents are no longer invited to their family gatherings at Christmas, Easter, birthdays and Thanksgiving. Another guy told me that him and his his had legally divorced their parents because of the same reasons. So stupid they refuse to believe what family members are telling about what these Reformers are doing to us. I didn’t think you could do that but lawyers assured me you can. They can’t be held responsible if a parent needs long term healthcare help and can’t afford it.

biff

thank you for pounding this reality. of course, the con-named party or bust crowd will never be fair enough to acknowledge what those con-named parties have done to albertans, and given away to insiders and big oil. they will also not be honest and demand that big oil clean up and pay for their mess.

biff

hear! hear!
