Canada must be prepared to protect our free trade

By Lethbridge Herald on March 21, 2025.

Editor,
For the past two months all President Trump ever talked about is punishing Canada, Mexico and China over the 25 per cent tariffs. I am sure many people have prayed that this will never happen over 30 days. Lydia and I pray to God daily that Trump will change his mind, and not impose the tariff that he is threatening to do.

The Bible says: “Love your neighbour.” Who is my neighbour? Is it someone next door or isn’t Trump our neighbour? We hear this regularly in our preacher’s sermons “love your neighbour as we love ourselves”.
Perhaps Trump is kidding about adding 25 per cent tariffs to our free trade agreement and merely testing our prime minister. Anyone who runs to Florida before Trump becomes president and when Trump is sworn in is a weakling, including Danielle Smith, who probably thought that pandering to Trump will spare her of the tariff.

On the other hand, Trump may be serious about annexing Canada as the 51st state. He is not interested in the welfare of Canadians but has been eyeing our abundant resources including minerals and other products that the U.S. cannot produce enough on their own to support their citizens because they have 10 times more the population compared to Canada and need free trade with the world. I believe that Trump is a schoolboy bully. He lacks tact and honesty in his dealings with other countries, and his new advisors are the ones who control the U.S. government. I believe that since fentanyl is imported mostly from China Trump should apply 50 per cent tariffs on them and drop the tariffs to Canada and Mexico.

Before any president takes office, they should be tested by a psychiatrist to determine if they are fit to run the country and to make sure their mind is not off balance. So, April 2, 2025, Trump will likely drop all the tariffs because the 49th parallel will be protected, and Canada and Mexico’s free trade will resume without any added tariffs. Furthermore our new Prime Minister Mark Carney will not put up with Trump’s continued remarks that Canada should be their 51st State.

We should be prepared to protect our free trade with the U.S. since Trump is unpredictable and have our prime Mminister continue to look to the EU and Asian countries for their support. Furthermore, the Trump administration should contact King Charles III of England before invading Canada because we are part of the Commonwealth.

trump has exposed some glaring weaknesses in the usa system of checks and balances. and, the result, of course, is the makings of a dictatorship.
it began with entrenching the principle that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted?! amazing…whether an admitted grabber and groper of females, or, it could be an abuser of children, but that is all beyond the realm of actual law because of that stupid principle.moreover, the usa has a felon for president, convicted by jury on 34 counts of falsifying business records in a hush-money scheme.
next, add in that pretty much any “law” borne of executive order can fly, and then mix in a good pinch of telling the courts, including the usa supreme court, that they have no say…and, even though they do have legal say that means nothing to trump: they will be opposed and ignored by the president who cannot be held to legal account on the grounds that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted.
next, threaten, axe, cut, emasculate, fire and hire whomever whenever at a whim, ever disobeying and running roughshod over the rule of law, maybe impose a few new laws – even if those laws are unconstitutional, because the courts and laws mean nothing unless trump endorses them – and those in positions that are the very pieces of the checks and balances fold into their cocoons of self service, complicity and cowardice.
so, we see republicans are almost to the person supportive of a dictatorship, as they do nothing to reign in their king. can trump be impeached? well, given the stance of the repubs who own the senate and congress, and given the holes in the system of checks and balances, and given that king trump has declared loud and clear that insurrection is pardonable and desirable so long as it supports king trump.
finally, where are the people of the land of the free in all this? quiet little mice, twitching their tiny whiskers whilst the land of the free and the home of the brave is quickly, very very quickly, becoming the land of the feeble and the home of the enslaved.
