Editor,
Re: “Carney travelling to Rome today, will be among world leaders at Pope’s inaugural mass,” May 16.
The article states: “Carney is a devout Catholic…” This is a false statement. Marc Carney supports and advocates for abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage.
The Catholic Church teaches, as everybody knows, against all of these. The Church also teaches one cannot be Catholic and support any of these assaults against the family and the dignity of human life.
On May 15, 2025 Pope Leo XIV said in an address to the Diplomatic Corps:
“It is the responsibility of government leaders to work to build harmonious and peaceful civil societies. This can be achieved above all by investing in the family, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman, “a small but genuine society, and prior to all civil society.” [2] In addition, no one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, especially the most frail and vulnerable, from the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed, citizens and immigrants alike.”

Maureen Remus, are you God’s assistant who decides who is “devout” or not?
Typical hypocritical statement from a god fearing individual.
One must respect the “dignity for every person” – unless that person is a member of the LGBTQ2 community who has no rights according to Remus. Same with a person dying with widespread metastatic cancer kept alive on machines and drugs – unless God calls them home. Same with a daughter , who because of incest , becomes pregnant , but denied an abortion because of the “rights of the unborn”. Same with a person of another faith or an atheist, denied access to Ms Remus’s afterlife because of their non Christian beliefs.
So here is my question to Maureen: Would you acknowledge , embrace and welcome a gay person, no questions asked? Would you allow a dying person kept alive on drugs, to end their lives using MAID? Would you allow a child pregnancy because of rape to be terminated? Do you support gay marriage? Do you accept a person of another faith without question?
Given that president Trump in all likelihood would say “no” to all these questions, do you Ms Remus support the president and feel he is a proud advocate of all things God desires?
Carney’s faith as a Catholic, devout or not, has little bearing on his ability to lead the nation in these times brought on by Trump himself and possibly that other “devout Catholic”, one JD Vance.
you tell ’em, ms reemus. and, you tell us, all, that one’s body is not one’s realm – it is the state’s.
why not have some real faith, all ye self righteous control freaks: faith that, in the end, god will send the unrepentant sinners to ever lasting hell, where they will exist forever in pain and misery and fire (what, no wieners and marshmallows?).
and, as a bonus to us all, why not look after your own back yards and let others tend to theirs.
ever the better would be to actually do some good works, such as housing the homeless, feeding the hungry, and exercising the actual compassion and the non-judgemental ways of the heart as per the one called christ.
