Trump is playing governing Liberals for fools with his whims

By Lethbridge Herald on July 23, 2025.

Editor,

I enjoy watching the Liberals scurry around pretending they are making headway on trade and insisting all the while that it’s a deal for Canada or no deal. Meanwhile the real negotiator/dictator isn’t even in the room? So we flail away pretending to make headway when we have already been told exactly what is about to happen to us. That is, we will be the 51st state unless someone puts some big boy pants on and realizes that the negotiations are a farce and all you are doing is making yourself publicly subservient to the real message.

There will not be any real negotiations, period! We will be the source of all fentanyl and aliens, we will be whatever Trump’s imagination wants us to be. We can spend $1.2 billion flying around attack helicopters and dancing to his tune, but in the end, he will just change the tune.

So why not get on with the job of protecting Canada? Trump has already told us he wants us to be the 51st state and intends on economically killing us to achieve that end. That should be the shutdown of any negotiations, period! So at what point do Liberals finally realize that Trudeau planted the seed of 51st state and Trumps obsession with his own “Kingness” which is going to propel us in that direction?

Any deal he signs is not worth the paper that its written on, so start living and thriving/surviving knowing full well that the U.S. has become a hostile place for Canadian goods. The faster you realize that and start telling Canadians the real truth on how bad this is, the better we will be in the future.

Carney and his Liberals have over promised support for Canadians losing their job to a point of future Canadian bankruptcy.

What’s the plan to save us? There isn’t one. All there is, is more and more announcements of bailouts if things go south.

So at what point do we strap on the big boy pants and say enough is enough? We have long passed that point and Trump is loving it.

Canada should be proactive with our trade negotiations with Trump. We are reacting to his constant threats and then only go so far as to match his actions. I like Ford’s approach to hit the US hard and threaten them with more tariffs. We have to hit the US hard and watch the American citizens suffer to the point that Trump sees he has to back off. I understand he’s irrational and no amount of economic pressure is going to affect him personally but hopefully political pressure makes him be more willing to negotiate fairly. I don’t think kissing his ass and capitulation is a winning strategy. In other words don’t be like Smith.

Not exactly sure what you have in mind as far as Big Boy Pants goes, Dennis? Are we talking lots of zippered pockets? Extra sized for incontinence diapers? Something with suspenders?

As far as negotiating goes, you are assuming that we can’t also walk away from promises if the other party does. No harm in that

I’m more concerned about the ‘no consultation, no regulations, no oversight’ approach to mineral extraction in response to economic numbers (over long-term environmental and social health). Alas, the environment bats last (in spandex pants).

kind of confused as to why this letter is being presented again.

old school

Critical reading shows it to be a different letter. Same vein , different point. Liberals making noise but doing nothing of substance. Threaten the US with tarriffs? Makes our stuff we get from them much mire costly. Hurts us , the taxpayer, the Canadians.

What?

come on! it is almost a word for word reproduction, if this were written by another person it would easily be plagiarism.
i am not sure you understand what is critical reading.

Tourette’s

buckwheat

Dennis has a point. The U.S. just negotiated and signed an agreement with Japan for over 500 billion. Canada has chased away 89 billion since February. Time for Carney and the rest of them to put or shut up and get out of the way. Punish the U.S. Laughable.

Not content with a letter published last week, Bremner has written another misguided meandering fluffy thingy. Sad really, because DB’s point is quite correct in so far as to the stupidity emanating from the psychopathic lunatic down south. Exactly what does he think should happen? This is the second time he has used the term “big boy pants” in as many weeks! So again, what exactly should Carney do? Wave a red flag in front of a bull as Ford et al have suggested or the white flag of Smith et al , cozying up to the despot in his home alongside our very own Kevin O’Leary?
That the despot cannot be trusted is plainly true as is his lying and proven deception in all things.
Bremner’s suggestion that the 51st state infatuation is Trudeau’s fault is in a word “bollocks”.
What does the writer think that Poilievre would do differently? Oh yes, put all the blame on a non proven politician who happens to have been head of two of the world’s larger banks.
I know who I’d put my money on.
Perhaps real bipartisanship (are you reading Rachel ?) would be a good place to start.
