Editor,
I am writing to share my thoughts on the recent article in Thursday’s Herald regarding the mayor reaching out to social media commentators.
While I understand the impulse to address public discourse, I believe the mayor should not engage with the uninformed and often ignoble posts on social media.
Elected officials at all levels of government face criticism, but they should not be subjected to the intellectual or moral ignorance displayed by some online commentators. It is acceptable to critically evaluate the policies and platforms of our elected officials; this is a fundamental aspect of democracy for those who participate in the voting process.
However, criticism should always be constructive. For those who feel strongly enough to voice their opinions anonymously on social media, I encourage them to consider a more direct approach: file nomination papers and run for office in the next election. It is easy to hide behind anonymity, but true change often requires putting one’s name and face to one’s convictions.

Yes, putting one’s name to one’s convictions, just like your letter to the Herald does. Keep up the good work Stan.
