Smith oddly mum on floor-crossing

By Lethbridge Herald on November 15, 2025.

Editor,

There’s quite a bit of heated flapdoodle of late concerning the recent floor-crossing of a Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) MP in Ottawa, along with the  summary resignation of yet another. Much rummaging through the political entrails has resulted.

Great is both the glee and the dismay. And high is the indignation, with accusations heaped upon such perceived turncoat perfidy by several CPC mouthpieces. Cries of “traitor,” “coward” and “betrayal” abound. Ah, blessèd are the righteous. This is all a bucket of fresh, rich blood in the water for the many circling sharks of the commentariat, of course.

The Tory Titanic has seemingly pranged a submerged berg of its own dim-witted making and there is panic at the rails. Emergency flares are seen arcing through the storm-laden sky.

Of note, however, is the uncharacteristically tight-lipped posture of Premier Smith here in Alberta, for whom the success and/or failure of the federal Conservative Party is no small thing. She seems oddly mum on this file, otherwise not normally at a loss for comment on pithy matters of the day.

Guesses as to why? Well, might it have to do with her having been the vanguard of a veritable tsunami of floor-crossing in the Alberta legislature not so long ago?

And whereas it is not difficult to discern a moral and ethical dimension to the decisions of monsieurs d’Entremont and Jeneroux, especially given the toxic insolence of the Leader of HM Loyal Opposition, there is simply no lip-sticking the opportunistic pig that was the craven abandonment of the Wildrose in pursuit of what was then reckoned to be a sure-fire access to governmental power under the soon-to-be-hapless Jim Prentice.

Here was political misjudgment on a truly epic scale. And here was actual perfidy. She didn’t even bother to dress it up as a matter of conscience. It was simple lust for power.

But there you go. Wudderya gonna do? Our parliamentary democracy is a rough and tumble business. Even UFC blood-sport has standards of behaviour, though. Nobody likes a cheater.

Oddly, you are attempting to creat a controversy out of nothing. Currently, she must deal Carney Federally. She will negotiate or deal with Pierre if the time comes. Attempting to blend opinions on federal and provincial politics is a no go.
