Editor,
Every Albertan in Alberta liked the Charter a lot,
But our Premier in Edmonton—well, she did NOT!
She HATED the Charter, all those freedoms and rights,
Though no one knows why—maybe her shoes were too tight?
Chances are (and this reason is most likely of all),
Her problem was her own heart, which was two sizes too small.
Whatever the reason, tight shoes or cramped heart,
Our poor, angry Premier longed to rip the Charter apart.
She saw trans folk playing hockey and teachers striking on the picket,
And she growled to herself, “I’ll tell them where they can STICK IT!
But HOW? What can I DO?” She pined (while trying to loosen a shoe).
“What would those MAGA-gurus down in Mar-a-Lago tell me to DO?”
Oh, she puzzled and puzzled, till her puzzler was sore,
Then she gasped, “That’s what the Not Withstanding Clause is for!
Yes, I’ll stop those teachers striking and those trans kids playing sports—
I’ll stop them for good and shield my Bills from the courts!”
Whatever else she is, our Premier is certainly not slow—
She invoked the Not Withstanding Clause FOUR TIMES in a ROW!
And so shielded her Bills, but she shredded our rights,
And she did it so slick and fast—practically overnight.
Now our Premier laughs, oh how she laughs with a snigger,
And no Christmas miracle will inflate her heart any bigger.
When Albertans lose their rights, it affects the tall and the small,
It’s more than just trans folk and teachers—this AFFECTS US ALL.
So, my fellow Albertans, please sign those recall petitions
Before our Premier sells the eastern slopes and privatizes physicians.
And, next election, send that Grinch back to her cave on Mt. Crumpit.
Her policies belong in the trash bin, and it’s high time that we dump it.

The NWC was used to prevent errant judges (which the left love) from writing things into the constitution. This is the real issue, the left has been slapped down from their drive for judicial activism and listen to them howl about writes. Peter Lougheed would be proud. Please list the rights you have lost. When you lose the right to vote to unelected errant judges, get back to us.
Funny. One person’s ‘errant judges’ is another person’s ‘independent judiciary’ – you know, rule of law (as opposed to rule of bigotry and ideology).
The UCP and Danielle Smith believes they are above the law.

So once again you are so stupid and so proud of it you have keep proving it. Way to go it gives us a good laugh.
44 down votes shows how little support they have.
Lougheed specifically wrote that the NWC should only be allowed to be used after all judicial options had been exhausted, and that it should require more than 60% of elected MLAs to support it. The UCPs actions are exactly the authoritarian overreach that he warned us about.
curious – you seem well aware that our electoral process, our democracy, are significantly corrupted. if that is so, how on earth does one square “elected” judges as preferable to appointed based on merit?
moreover, does one not examine how ultra corrupted is the american judicial and enforcement system, where they have been electing judges and sheriffs with woeful results in terms of justice. the cherry on the top is their for profit penal system, where further corruption runs wild.
Your comment that judges are “writing things into the constitution” is utter nonsense. There are no provisions in the Constitution for the courts to make amendments.
I’m sure various courts have made constitutional rulings that you don’t agree with, but that is not the same thing as amendments.
Great comments Jacob. This is typical of all reformers there nothing conservative about any of them.
It’s a power grab. For those who had uncles, and relatives who fought in World War 2, like I have, they would be disgusted by this if they were still around. The UCP doesn’t like democracy at all.
Ok. That was creative. I got a laugh.
