Is Alberta’s separation really the UCP’s priority?

By Lethbridge Herald on January 15, 2026.

Editor:

On January 3, 2026 I emailed the following to Mr. Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge East.  Mr. Neudorf, as you know a bunch of separatists have been given the go ahead to collect enough signatures for a referendum for the Province of Alberta to quit Canada and become an independent state.Obviously your Government made it much easier for them by extending the time to collect the signatures and lowering the amount of signatures required as compared to the petition to remain in Canada. I have just one question for you: Are you personally in favour of Alberta becoming an independent state?. I would suggest rather than giving me a long convoluted non Government answer, a simple yes or no would suffice.

On January 8, 2026 I received the following answer from Mr. Neudorf: “Whatever Albertans vote for, the premier will respect their vote. Furthermore, my view aligns with the Alberta government, which is the hope for a sovereign Alberta within a United Canada.”

This answer raises more questions: Let’s start with the word sovereign, a truly sovereign Alberta cannot simultaneously be part of Canada, as sovereignty implies independence.  About the Premier  respecting their vote, well good luck with that, she may respect it but more than likely would not accept it if the results are not what she wants.

Here are a few examples what the Premier is trying to do, contrary the people’s wishes: opt out of the Canada Pension Plan, get rid of the RCMP,  in favour of Coal mining , stop renewable energy projects, prevent people from challenging laws passed by the UCP by using the notwithstanding clause, having to pay for vaccines, thus discouraging people from getting vaccinated. In a 2003 Calgary Herald column Premier Smith claimed that the anti-smoking lobby does more harm than good and downplayed the harm of smoking up to half a pack of cigarettes per day and claimed smoking can actually reduce the risk of disease.Well I guess it does, after smoking kills you it’s hard to pick up a disease!!!   I guess just like ivermectin will now prevent COVID, is blood letting the next cure for all that ails us? And this woman is the premier of the Province of Alberta!!!!.

Here is one more item that should concern all Albertans: Back to the sovereignty issue, Premier Smith has not publicly stated how she would vote on the separation issue but here is a hint: On June 2, 2025 in an op-ed in the Washington Times she summed it up stating “ If America wants true energy dominance, not just independence, it must consider its allies. No ally is more energy rich, reliable or integrated with the American economy than Alberta”.  Notice that she said Alberta, not Canada.

Obviously Mr. Neudorf is in agreement with the wishes of the Premier and the UCP or else he would be booted out of the UCP caucus., and never mind what his constituents want.

Good commentary Mr. Feenstra. The owner of the Washington Times is

In other words the Moonies., “founded by Sun Myung Moon (1920–2012)”

Danielle Smith, the UCP, and the Moonies, my gawd!

i did not know that the official ucp position is for a sovereign alberta; neudorf’s statement makes that clear, though.
going forward, a vote for the ucp should be regarded as a vote for separatism.
it would seem that a separate from canada alberta would soon be a not separate from the usa parcel of land. mind you, the province with the most pro-trump, maga zealots is, hands down, alberta. how soon before smith dyes her hair orange, and mostly addresses the press with loud helicopter or jet engines in the background.

Only fools can believe that Alberta can separate from Canada. We can’t, and for far too many reasons. Danielle Smith is fueling this nonsense to distract from the UCP’s massive failures as a a government.

Every lawyer, accountant, economist, oilman, banker and my American Relatives we talk to says we would be idiots if we did. How many stupid Albertans want to pay $800. To $1,000. Per month each for their healthcare? That’s how stupid they are and of course that’s exactly what these Reformers want. Oilman state oil companies will likely have to scrap there oil production policies and renegotiate them and aren’t dumb enough to want that, why would they?

Dwayne.W

You are correct. Many people in the United States go broke, because they can’t afford to pay out of their own pocket for healthcare. Is that a good thing for us here?

The UCP and Danielle Smith follow ideology over medical professionals. They disagree with vaccines. Anyone who is in their 80s, or older, will tell you it’s a good thing for modern medicine. There are people who are in their 80s, or older, who will tell you that they had siblings who passed away at a young age, because they didn’t have the modern medical advances we have today. I even had an uncle who passed away at a very young age in the 1920s, because they didn’t have the modern medical care we have now.

Do we want to emulate the gun policies they have in the United States? Look at how many gun deaths there are over there. Danielle Smith and the UCP doesn’t care.

Ten of us seniors know the Covid vaccine saved our lives when we got it because all the fools we knew who didn’t bother are dead.

Dwayne.W

This is what the UCP has done. Danielle Smith allows it. If an MLA from a previous government in power in Alberta hosted anti-vaccine town halls, they likely would have been fired. Dr. Mark Joffe was likely muzzled by the UCP and Danielle Smith, because he could only advocate for getting vaccinated for measles, after he wasn’t employed by the Alberta provincial government. What are your thoughts on these things?

Lawyers certainly agree with you. All provinces would have agree and you know that’s not going to happen, don’t they?

Dwayne.W

Very true. Look at the utter nonsense that people write in the Letters To The Editor in the Sun newspapers. You will never see this newspaper printing letters that speak the truth about how bad the UCP and Danielle Smith are.

I have seen other (short) lineups of people who were going to sign the petition for Alberta separation. They were mostly seniors.

knowlton

If Alberta separates.. it will not be a part of NATO at the beginning.. Trump will quickly take over Alberta.. you think the Canadian Forces will defend us?

Therefore.. is Neudorf pro-American??

Fedup Conservative

Great point.

Lethson

According to the separatist town halls currently taking place, the United States has already offered military support for a sovereign Alberta “while the new nation builds up its own military”.

Chmie

I’ve always thought Smith and her ucp supported the separatists and Neudorf confirmed it. U should have asked him how he feels about his recall petition 😂😂
