Alberta will not be made an island

When reading posts on social media these days concerning our province of Alberta, the separatist’s movement continues to reference change. The “take back our province from Ottawa and bring about change” narrative is so out to lunch because their agenda is to join the US. We have been voting for the same political party for over 40 years and now they say they want change? We are the only province in Canada with no sales tax and if we are not doing well because of Ottawa, why haven’t we brought this about? Also, if we are suffering in this province because of Ottawa and the east, why haven’t we attempted to amalgamate with BC, for instance? We would certainly have a bigger say in federal politics. The reasons are clear to me why we have not implemented a change all these years and it is because we are not doing as badly as our provincial government says we are. And the separatists see an opportunity with Danielle Smith and the UCP party at the helm of our government to push their narrative. I laugh when I read about how we are being abused by the feds when it comes to transfer payments. Maybe these people don’t understand that these payments by the” have” provinces like Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Ontario were implemented when the Constitution Act of 1867 was drawn up. It was later modernized in 1957 (Equalization plan) and 1982(constitution). They are intended to share the wealth so that all provinces have similar levels of public services, like health and education. We receive health payments from the federal government through the Canada Health Transfer so we are getting some of our equalization payments back. Last year the UCP government opted out of the National Dental Plan offered by federal government because it infringed on provincial jurisdiction and it wants local control. Alberta is the only province to opt out so there again, we must be doing not bad! So, all this rhetoric about Alberta being neglected by Ottawa is just that, rhetoric. And those posts on social media knocking our province and declaring war on Ottawa are most likely posted by computer generated bots from outside our province or country on behalf of the separatist movement. They main focus is unrest so that the separatists can fulfil their agenda. But unlike these separatists, we adults are smarter than a fifth grader and will not fall to their whim.

I will agree that the separatists are out to lunch but to say we get back some of our equalization payments through the health transfer is equally as hair brained. That’s our taxes that we pay just like every other citizen of canada. If they did away with equalization all that would do is maybe raise the transfers a little bit as it would go up for every province in Canada. Health transfers are not equalization payments and don’t equate it to them.
It’s a well known fact in the real world that Albertans pay nothing in equalization payments, so why is that so hard for Alberta seniors to understand? If these Reformers hadn’t destroyed Lougheed’s oil royalties and corporate tax wealth we wouldn’t need equalization payments and that’s why we don’t get any.
You are correct. This isn’t what Peter Lougheed intended for Alberta.

Wonderful comments Kerry. It’s truly amazing how stupid many Albertans are, aren’t they? Sadly most of them are seniors who should be a lot smarter but they aren’t are they?
Those of us from the world of finance with ties to the oil industry haven’t forgotten the American Oilmen working in Alberta that we were involved with that called Albertans the dumbest people on the planet. For good reason. They knew what allowing these Reformers to destroy Lougheed’s oil royalties and corporate taxes would do us and it certainly did. We know Albertans lost at least $1.2 Trillion as this article proves. “Royalties Down 32% Billions In Federal Revenue Lost” It was former Conservative MLAs that brought it to my attention. They were as disgusted as I am with these Reformers and the idiots who support them.
While these Reformers feed their stupid supporters the lie that times are tough and we must cut back yet every other oil rich area in the world continues to build on their savings accounts to build a wealthy future for their children and their grandchildren. While our children and grandchild have nothing to look forward to, because of the billions of dollars in debt these Reformers have created.
So while gs172 proves he doesn’t want to help others province he deliberately ignores the billions of dollars these Reformers have screwed us out of and in a true Reform Party fashion he ignores what Justin Trudeau did for this province and believes the lies these Reformers feed him.
Maybe he better wake and google the true facts that we knew?
(1) Alberta has received more funds from Feds than it has from revenues in decades.
(2) Albertans received more COVID funds per capita than the people in any other province”.
(3) Alberta oil industry received a $35 billion pipeline to save their oil industry.
To prove how stupid Albertans are, they thank Ottawa for saving them from these Reform Party idiots by wanting to separate from Canada and screw Canadians out of billions of dollars in Federal Taxes, that’s how stupid they are, aren’t they?

Young Albertans have been telling us since Christmas that it’s becoming so bad in their families that they have told the seniors in their families that they are no longer welcome at family gatherings, and have banned them from Christmas and birthdays, that’s how bad it is.

You might’ve misunderstood me in my comment. It’s not that I don’t want to help other provinces in hard times(I do). It’s peoples perceptions that ending equalization is going to make everything ok, it’s not. The federal government has a responsibility to serve all Canadians equally and if that means that the ones who make more help out the ones that don’t it perfectly makes sense. Just as the people who pay 3 times the property tax as I do don’t get a new road every year. Yes, what the PC’s,NDP and UCP have done with our money is criminal. I’ve long advocated for a PST as what we have now is the money goes out the door as fast as it comes in.
Alberta pays nothing in equalization it comes out federal government taxes that all Canadians pay into at the same rate and Albertans don’t even pay most of that. It’s the biggest populations that do. Ralph Klein privatized road maintenance and construction and the cost to Albertans when up 300% we were told. The NDP had nothing to do with it.
The problem is a simple one. If these Reformers starting with Ralph Klein hadn’t destroyed Lougheed’s oil royalties and corporate taxes we would have nothing to worry about, like Norway and Alaska don’t, do they?
Agreed, federal taxes are federal taxes and everyone pays the same. We have had it easier in Alberta. Why, because we’re shortchanging future generations with unresponsible economic planning and spending. I was sick when Ralph bucks came out. Vote buying plain and simple.
A separated Alberta, standing alone in the midst of all that buffoonery and threats south of the border makes one want to gag.
Just think of all the seniors who are so stupid they want them to go ahead and do it. Privatization of healthcare will add $24,000.per year per couple to the cost of their healthcare and they could have their Canada Pension Plan eliminated that’s how stupid they are.
