Editor,
The chaotic political situation in the United States (U.S.) is forcing Canadians to rethink the way we do business. While the White House picks fights with Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney has been busy modernizing our military, attracting foreign investment and finding new reliable alliances abroad. Securing emerging markets like India and China. That’s where the real growth is, not in more lop-sided trade deals with a declining hegemony like the U.S.
wThe world is changing, it’s time we stopped acting like a 51st state. After all, Canada is a resource powerhouse, an agricultural giant backed by political stability, sensible gun laws, the most reliable banking system in the G7 and a skilled workforce. We have what the world wants. This makes us strong and independent. Our universal heath-care system, sense of fair play and belief in the common good adds to our strengths.
Washington’s hostility towards Canada demonstrates that America is no longer friendly or trustworthy. We were warned decades ago that too much integration with the U.S. would leave us vulnerable. The chickens have now come home to roost.
It’s doubtful that we can continue to partner with today’s unpredictable tarrif-happy backward looking U.S. government. Canada understands this and in spite of Washington’s arrogance, is forging ahead without the U.S.. This goes far beyond Trumpism or who the next erratic US. president might happen to be, but rather, a symptom of what American has become.
