Alberta’s budget is no laughing matter

By Letter to the Editor on March 10th, 2020

In regard to your front page photo, Friday, Feb. 28, Mr. Toews is delivering a “red-ink budget,” (a red herring budget, more like it). Question: Why is Mr. Kenney laughing? His MLAs seem exceptionally serious over this budget. No doubt because it will be their job to explain it to their constituents. Perhaps, though, at ... Read More »

MP should represent views of constituents

By Letter to the Editor on March 10th, 2020

The MP for Lethbridge, Rachael Harder, spoke in the House of Commons on Feb. 27 regarding Bill C-7, which deals with medical assistance in dying (MAID). She took her usual entrenched position of demanding that we keep people alive as long as possible. However, there are people who are in pain, have no hope of ... Read More »

Freedom of the press is in trouble

By Letter to the Editor on March 7th, 2020

I believe there are many factors that can contribute to the demise of our democracy, including the deterioration of our election process, corruption throughout governments and society in general, fake news/social media and people confusing personal commentary as factual news. One of my biggest fears is the loss of an unbiased free press. This letter ... Read More »

Blockades an extortion attempt

By Letter to the Editor on March 6th, 2020

Canadians have a legal right to do business without harassment. Blockading of highways and rail lines is a blatant attempt at extortion and those who do it should be immediately removed by law enforcement! Businesses hurt by the blockades (that are allowed to remain in place) should sue the government for failing to enforce the ... Read More »

Coaldale should give citizens a voice via plebiscite

By Letter to the Editor on March 6th, 2020

The town of Coaldale has decided that the people of Coaldale have no voice in deciding where the new high school and recreation centre will be located. The very people who took an oath to lead the town for the best potential of the Town of Coaldale have failed since declaring “no plebiscites!” With a ... Read More »

Why print Fraser Institute articles?

By Letter to the Editor on March 5th, 2020

I have to wonder why the Lethbridge Herald continues to print offerings from the Fraser Institute. The institute has been questioned in the past over its methodology, for instance counting taxes twice in their “Tax Freedom Day” articles. They are also largely funded by Koch Industries, a U.S. conglomerate. Yes, the Fraser Institute that is ... Read More »

Corporate influence over gov’t policy

By Letter to the Editor on March 5th, 2020

Although many (including me) tell our elected officials to reject the fossil-fuel industry’s new proposed projects, the governing representatives unfortunately are not so free to deny the politically potent resource extractors their profitable goals. While it’s politically much easier to sit in the Opposition’s chair, powerful business interests are pulling governmental strings regarding lands and ... Read More »

Gov’t must stay committed to carbon pricing

By Letter to the Editor on March 4th, 2020

Thank you for publishing Bob Weber’s Canadian Press article about Canada’s progress towards meeting its Paris goals. As David Sawyer accurately points out, regulating emissions and pricing carbon go hand-in-hand – they work most effectively when combined. Therefore, if Canada wants to be carbon-neutral by 2050, the federal government must continue increasing the price on ... Read More »

Easing euthanasia restrictions will erode safeguards

By Letter to the Editor on March 4th, 2020

Re: “Assisted dying bill gets mixed reviews, raises fears of more restrictions,” Feb. 26. The “experts,” Jocelyn Downie, James S. Palmer, Chair in Public Policy and Law at Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, and Stephanie Green of Canadian Association of MAID Assessors and Providers, clearly cannot be happy with the number so far of ... Private health insurance doesn’t run like a fine Swiss watch

By Letter to the Editor on March 3rd, 2020

Americans like talking about Switzerland’s private health system, where it seems everyone is blissfully buying private insurance and getting great health care. But does Switzerland’s health insurance scheme really run like a fine Swiss watch? The Swiss government guarantees health care for all of its citizens by regulating the private insurance industry; markedly different from ... Read More »
