FROM THE HILL
Rachael Thomas – Conservative MP for Lethbridge
A little humility can go a long way, especially for those of us in places of leadership.
Sadly, this conviction is seemingly absent in the Liberal government.
Tragically, it has become the habit of Liberal MPs to categorize anyone who disagrees with them as racist, misogynist or even a Nazi.
You will likely recall that we found ourselves thrust into an unnecessary election this time last year. From day one, the Prime Minister’s strategy was to divide Canadians, stigmatize anyone who failed to hold his ideals, and pit regions of our country against each other.
With malice in his voice, he outlandishly labelled all unvaccinated Canadians “misogynists and racist.” He questioned whether we should tolerate “these people” as if they were of lesser value.
Mr. Trudeau even went so far as to liken my Conservative colleague, MP Melissa Lantsman, to people waving Nazi flags. Never mind the fact that she is Jewish.
In addition to routinely attaching the most heinous labels to people with whom they disagree, the Trudeau Liberals are obsessed with regulating speech.
There are three separate pieces of legislation on the books for this year, which would censor what Canadians can see, hear, and say online: Bill C-11, Bill C-18, and a forthcoming online harms bill.
The Liberal government sees itself as the moral authority on speech. The irony, of course, is that they are some of the worst perpetrators of using distasteful language, inciting hate, and spreading misinformation.
There could not be a clearer example than the recent situation wherein the Canadian Heritage department hired a raging anti-Semite to provide anti-racism training for Canadian broadcasters. Laith Marouf is a senior consultant with the Community Media Advocacy Centre (CMAC), to whom the government awarded a $133,000 contract (paid with Canadian tax dollars) to conduct training sessions on hate speech.
What is unfathomable is the fact that Mr. Marouf somehow made it past the Liberal government’s vetting process—assuming there was one.
A few minutes on his Twitter feed would have revealed a whole host of the most abhorrent anti-Semitic statements and racist slurs one could imagine.
It begs the question, was Mr. Marouf assessed and contracted based on merit or was he a friend for whom the Liberals were simply doing a favour?
When the story started gaining traction, it was expected that Pablo Rodriguez, the Minister of Canadian Heritage, would issue some type of explanation and apology for this egregious incident.
After a week of deafening silence, I decided to write a letter to the minister pointing out the hypocrisy of his government’s virtue-signalling and the fact that he had yet to make a statement on the hiring of Mr. Marouf, for which his department was responsible.
To my surprise, his office responded by shirking responsibility and redirecting me to a different minister.
This is an example of Liberal tactic 101: avoid and evade any accountability.
I know everyone makes mistakes. Awarding a contract to a racist to teach Canadian broadcasters about anti-racism could be classified as one of the worst.
The issue I take now is the utter silence coming from the Liberal caucus as whole. This is not about Conservatives vs. Liberals; this is about right vs. wrong.
Anthony Housefather, who is a Jewish Liberal MP, is the only clear exception. To his credit, he has been extremely vocal on this matter from the beginning. He even pointed out Mr. Marouf’s troubling conduct weeks before the story broke, but nothing was done.
He later tweeted, “There is a feeling in my community that antisemitism is tolerated more than other forms of hate in North America today.”
Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel famously wrote, “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.”
The fact that there was an anti-Semite spewing hate from his social media pages while representing the Canadian government is reprehensible. The fact that the Heritage Minister has failed to take account and offer an apology is even worse.
And remember, this is the same minister who is responsible for three pieces of legislation targeted at regulating the speech of Canadians.
The hypocrisy could not be more obvious.
The tag line for the Liberal party should be “do what we say, not what we do.” Nothing more. Nothing less. Keep it simple. Keep it truthful. After all, honesty is the best policy, is it not?

What have you done for Lethbridge?
What’s Trudeau done for Lethbridge.
How does your question align with the Westminster system of parliamentary government?
Ms. Thomas is the MP for Lethbridge. In a Westminster democratic system, it is the the responsibility of the MP to represent constituents in Parliament. The Prime Minister, in a Westminster system, is head, with cabinet, of the executive branch of government. The Prime Minister is also an MP representing her/his constituents, which in this case is the riding of Papineau in Montreal QC.
Majority government and she is in opposition. There the system explained to you. Again, what has Trudeau/Singh done for Lethbridge. Two can act, one can beg and suggest. Guess who?…
Boom! you nailed it. As an opposition MP within this bizarre Liberal/NDP coalition. She is doing what she can.
What has Trudeau done for Quebec?
What has Trudeau done to……. Alberta and the country; other than decimate the economic engine.
What did Trudeau do for Germany recently, in their hour of need, other than sell them a bunch of fairy dust?
If hypocrisy is the operative word here, what is Ms. Thomas’s position vis a vis the atrocities being committed against Palestinians by Israel? Moreover, how would Ms. Thomas define anti-Zionism versus anti-Semitism as it relates to the discussion of the relations between Israel and Palestine?

Well Done.
Thank you once again Mrs. Thomas for keeping us informed and doing your job.
Mr. Marouf has made hateful, despicable comments about other humans for far too long.
It must sadly reflect his true nature his character. Hopefully his opportunity to spew this garbage will be severely curtailed, but sadly I suppose, some will continue to be attracted to this garbage.
Just as I suppose some will continue to condone this government’s attacks and insults of its own people.
For those unaware; this “man” (I say that sarcastically, loosely) has called some people “bags of feces”
How he could be vetted and his behavior condoned by the Liberal government is equally disturbing. He apparently was allowed to “train” various levels government and numerous departments including the military. One wonders whether some in this government condone his stance.
Similar to your mention of a tag line, I believe the Liberal Party has a mantra for every scandal they create;
Deny, Deflect, Distract (and Divide) or DDD. The original DDD pesticide was discontinued because it was classified as a probable human carcinogen.
I believe the Liberal government’s current agenda along with their mantra of DDD is just as harmful to the health of our nation and people as the original DDD pesticide.
Kind of ironic since they are so myopically focused on the environment. I guess the Liberal government believes they are saving the environment while poisoning its people due to their policies and mantra.
All the while, they sing and play their theme song for us people being poisoned “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life” from Monty Pythons movie “The Life of Brian” While ignoring any serious issues of concern to real people.

I would add one more possibly very dangerous program the Liberals want to introduce; a digital currency. I know, it sounds innocuous enough, even possibly convenient for some. The crazy part is; given this Liberal government’s history can it be trusted enough to not weaponize this. Having control of bank accounts, along with food would be the ultimate control mechanism
Once cash is eliminated and banking, investing transactions done solely on a “smart phone” coupled with a possible China – like social rating scale and state run surveillance; we are hooped.
I hope like heck none of this happens. Please continue informing the citizens of what is happening and what is not in this Liberal/NDP government.
It was Poilivere who suggested a “digital currency” / Bitcoin system. You know, THAT Poilievre, who also wanted to fire the governor of the BOC.
You’re correct, on both counts as has Danielle Smith.
I believe Mr. Pollivere and Ms. Smith are most focused on the introduction of Crypto Currency. I do not understand Crypto Currency or Bitcoin; both appear to be exceptionally volatile whose value is set by the market and are not anchored to the value of a legal tender. In addition, they apparently somehow get created by users themselves only after the creation of the blocks. Whatever that means.
As Warren Buffet famously said; invest in things you understand. I do not understand Crypto Currency and or Bitcoin and therefore; for whatever my opinion is worth ( if anything); do not believe this is a good idea.
Regardless countries world wide are seeking and developing an alternative to the US reserve currency currently.
The People’s Bank of China, has been running tests of its digital currency since April.
China’s digital currency could challenge bitcoin and even the dollarBloomberg News

Who knows, whether, when or if the US$ will fall.
The Chinese government plans for its digital currency to replace its physical currency across the country and possibly become the world´s preferred currency.
Canada, like other countries worldwide, has been working on the development of a digital currency for some time.
I know, it sounds innocuous enough, even possibly convenient for some.
The crazy part is; given the Prime Minister’ s repetitively stated admiration for the Chinese and Cuban style of government, this Liberal government’s history, and it’s recent proclivity to freeze Canadian bank accounts; can it be trusted enough to not weaponize a digital currency?
Having control of bank accounts, along with food would be the ultimate control mechanism.
Once cash is eliminated and banking, investing transactions done solely on a “smart phone” coupled with a possible China – like social rating scale and state run surveillance; we are hooped. If Tim Horton’s can track your digital activities. Surely the government can……and more.
Not that I would vote for the Transmountain pipeline buying Trudeau Liberals, but this, well describes why I do not, vote for the UCP, nor, the federal Conservatives, no matter what they have to say at this point.
