LEAVE IT TO BEEBER
Al Beeber – Managing Editor
It’s easy to focus on negativity in the interesting times in which we live. Too easy, in fact.
And it gets exhausting. In a community of more than 100,000 people and a region with many more than that, there have to be stories that are uplifting and positive, don’t you think?
We certainly do. We believe here that Lethbridge and southern Alberta are great places to live, raise family and earn a living. We believe there are many hometown heroes contributing to their communities who never get acknowledged for what they do.
And it’s time to recognize them.
I’ve been thinking about starting this initiative for a long time and with the blessing of company management, I’m reaching out to the public to hear from you who you think those Hometown Heroes are.
Do you know someone who works tirelessly behind the scenes to do something worthwhile in your community?
It could be a music teacher who has a special way of connecting young students to the world of treble clefs and arpeggios. It could be a soccer coach who helps a timid or scared young athlete to gain confidence.
It could be someone who works with the less fortunate to bring some joy to their lives, from a volunteer at the food bank or someone providing bottles of water on a hot day to the unsheltered.
It could be someone knitting blankets to help the needy in a foreign country.
It could be a teacher who inspires students to succeed or get involved with their communities.
It could be a transit driver who helps customers feel they are appreciated and goes the extra mile, so to speak, in his or her job.
It could be anyone in southern Alberta who you feel deserves their contributions to be put in the spotlight.
We want to know who you think are Hometown Heroes. Do you have a special someone in mind who deserves recognition? If so, and if you can get permission from that individual to be named as such, we want to hear your stories. Or we will write our own if we have your nominee’s blessing.
We know that many people don’t get acknowledged for the positive contributions they make to the world around us. These are people who aren’t household names but they are people who make a positive difference in others’ lives.
We know every community has people who deserve to have their stories told.
And we want to tell those stories.
Think about this idea and when you have a person you feel deserves to be recognized, please contact me here at editor@lethbridgeherald.com
We’re looking for submissions of perhaps 300-500 words with a high-resolution photo of the person you’re writing about.
We need more uplifting stories in this world and we know there are plenty out there to tell. And so do you.
And so do you.
