BREWER

1951 – 2021

PHILLIP MAURICE (BILLY) passed away on March 11, 2021 in Lethbridge, AB at the age of 70 years. Billy was born on March 7, 1951 to Ben & Annie Brewer. Billy was born with Special needs and was unable to communicate through speech and the doctors expressed concern that he will also never walk. Billy was so loved by his parents, siblings and cousins that his disability never bothered anyone and he was always included in their play. Billy learned the Blackfoot language as it was always spoken to him at home, he learned to communicate his emotions and opinions through gestures and eventually exceed the doctors expectations and became fully mobile when he began walking. Phillip (Billy) grew up at the family homestead and was always in the company of his dog “Blackie”. In his early years he started a stuffed animal collection and would often get upset if the little ones touched any of them. He also loved catalogues and magazine and to the dismay of many he would hide the Sears catalog from everyone! As he spent his days alone with Mamma he would build forts and to cozy up in peace and quiet. As he grew he would mimic the actions of his older brothers as they worked on the planting and harvesting; he’d run alongside the tractor during planting and try to keep up and in the music he enjoyed from brother Hugh and Wilbert and would often be heard singing along to country and rock n roll! Billy, in his own sweet way, flirted with his sister-in-law Veronica and the minute he heard his brother Ray’s name he would quickly scramble away out of sight!

In 1964, the federal nurse from the government recommended that he be institutionalized and he was sent to the Michener Centre, in Red Deer, Alberta. He spent 15 years in this institution which was a home of horrors for the mentally disabled. He left not knowing English, was refused home visits and was physically, emotionally and spiritually marred by this place. This trauma was devastating as he also became more aggressive from being there. His older sister Nora, began a mission to save her brother from this institution and lobbied for many years to have him removed from the torturous living there. Her actions were successful and he was moved home until she found an adequate group home, whose compassionate care for individuals helped restore Billy back to a human being again. He spent several years in these types of group homes until he was re-located to his own private residence in Cochrane, Alberta under the Community Living Alternative Program. It was through this journey that he had made a lifelong friend in his roommate Scott, as well as all his excellent Community Support Staff: Krystin, Martin, Zachary, Ben, Grace, & Mike. Scott had been with Billy for over 25 years in many programs so it was only natural that they became paired off in their own home, Scott was blind and a mute, so Billy had always took him under his care and helped to look after him which made them inseparable. It was in 2018 that Billy’s health became compromised, and his need for respite care became a necessity. He moved from Cochrane to the Edith Cavell Centre, in 2019 and remained there until his passing. Much Heartfelt Appreciation and Thanks to: Cochrane Lake Homes/Community Living Alternative Services for the excellent care and compassionate care over the years; Staff Ben McGonical; Krysten Vekved; Chauffer Martin Alube; Zachary Vance; Grace Izabilliza, Mike Saretky and the Music & Art Teachers; and lastly: to the awesome staff at Edith Cavell Centre for making Billy’s last year’s comfortable.

Surviving Billy are: Brother, Raymond & Veronica Brewer and Families; sister Mrs. Nora Healy & Blake, Brandon, Tanya & family; sister Debbie, Logan , Julia & family; Nieces & Nephews from his late sister Celina: Kathy Goodstriker & family, Rochelle & Corey Pace & family, Rufus Jr.& family; the families of late Frances WH;Leon & family; from his late brother Pat : Donna Wells & family, Lorelie Blackhorse & family; Sheldon & Family, Jonathan & Family, Oscar Brave Rock & family; Clement Brave Rock. Nieces from his late sister Rachel: Tina & Louise & families. As well as the many cousins and relations from Annette & Paul Russel Families; Eva & Buster Mills Families.

A Viewing will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Sunday, March 21 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The Family Service will be held at Legacy on Monday, March 22 at 11:00 am. (Due to COVID-19 – A total of 20 people will be allowed into the service.) Interment to follow at Blood Band Cemetery, Blood Reserve, AB.

John Duff

1938 – 2021

It is with broken hearts and profound sorrow the family announces the unexpected passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandpa John Duff at the age of 82 years, on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Coaldale Health Centre in Coaldale, AB.

John came abruptly into the world alongside the road at Sec.22, Tp26, Rge7, W2nd on June 21, 1938, to Douglas and Grace (Sanders) Duff near Beaverdale, Saskatchewan where the Duffs farmed. Baby John was delivered by his Grandmother (Grammy) Duff in that ditch! Although Grammy never had any formal training, she was known as a midwife by a lot of the local families and also delivered his older brother Peter, his only sibling. John is predeceased by his parents, his brother and most recently his beloved wife Margaret – only 48 short days prior to his own passing.

John joined the Air Cadets in North Vancouver at the age of 14. At the tender age of 18, he received his wings and John earned his pilot’s icence, a proud Air Cadet accomplishment.

John attended North Vancouver High school in Vancouver, BC when he met the love of his life, Margaret Hicks, his high school sweetheart from a rival high school John Oliver. They were married on September 10, 1960 and enjoyed over 60 years of marriage. John and Marg had two children: Keith and Laura.

John was a great businessman and enjoyed a 35-year career in the Insurance business. John co-owned Duff Insurance with his wife Marg in Lethbridge for 15 of those years then enjoyed 26 years of Retirement.

John was a very hard worker who loved keeping busy with projects. He was multi-talented and great with tools. He was our Mr. Fix It and handyman extraordinaire. There didn’t seem to be anything he couldn’t fix. John once apprenticed in an autobody shop and later repaired & painted several family vehicles over the years, including building his own version of a Winnebago which he used to drive the family down to Disneyland and back! Not afraid of a sewing machine, he reupholstered several pieces of furniture over the years. John built additions onto two of their homes; he fixed up and ‘flipped’ a number of revenue homes before finally hanging up his hammer.

John loved hockey and coached a number of teams along the way, ending his coaching days with the Bridge City Barons Jr B team here in Lethbridge at their home rink, Nicholas Sheran. He is affectionately known by his past players as Mr. Duff even though he later gave them permission to call him John.

An avid golfer, he especially enjoyed being a ‘Snowbird’ wintering at their condo on the golf course in Yuma, Arizona. Over the years, John also enjoyed listening to music; especially Roger Whittaker, bird watching, walking and playing card games and socializing with friends.

John will be dearly missed and forever loved by his two children Keith Duff and wife Jeannie of Lethbridge, AB; Laura (Duff) and husband Glenn Hermann of Chestermere, AB. He will be sadly missed by his two grandchildren Lindsey (Duff) and husband Blake Corey; and Carson Duff; his two great-grandchildren Hayden and Jackson Corey; his numerous nephews and their families.

John/Dad/Grandpa/Pop was a gentle hearted, dedicated family man who would never shy of hard work and lending a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by his many life-long friends and all who knew him.

Due to Covid-19, a celebration of John’s life will be held at a future date when we can safely gather.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to the Coaldale Health Centre, 2100 11th St, Coaldale, AB T1M 1L2.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to the Physicians and all the staff, especially the nursing staff at the Coaldale Health Centre for all your kindness and compassion during John’s short residency.

EAGLE CHILD

Our beloved son, TOMMY LUKE EAGLE CHILD was welcomed into the Kingdom of God on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the age of 30. He leaves to mourn his son, Huxlie Eagle Child. Tommy is survived by parents, Cyril & Patty Eagle Child; his sister Andrea (Norbert) Red Crow; his brothers Matt, Kyler, and Bayley; nephews, Aubrey (Cherise), J.T., Nate, and niece, Chalaine and great niece, Bernice. Tommy is predeceased by his paternal grandparents Patrick and Bibiane Eagle Child and his maternal grandparents Tom and Madeline Oka. He is survived by his great uncle Martin Eagle Child; his paternal aunts, Delores (Roy), Vivian, Dolly (Jim), his late aunts, Rosaline, and Velma; paternal uncles, Campbell (Arlene), Lloyd, Winslow, Evans, Patrick (Lori Anne), his late uncle Roland. On his maternal side his great aunties Odile Day Chief; Bernadette Young Pine; his maternal aunties, Maves, Bernadette, Geraldine, his late aunties; Leita, Martha, Evelyn, Mary and Wilomena; his paternal uncles; Delroy and Dan and his late uncles, Alymer and Robert. Tommy had many first cousins too numerous to mention. His extended family includes the Chief Moon’s, Eagle Plume’s, Many Finger’s, Fox’s, Bruised Head’s, Blood’s, Pace’s, Young Pine’s, Oka’s, Weasel Fat’s, Healy’s, Cross Child’s, and No Runner’s. We apologize if we have missed any families.

Tommy Luke Eagle Child was born April 14, 1990, in Lethbridge, Alberta. His birth was an unexpected surprised as he was born 7 months premature and was so small that he fit into his dad’s hand. Tommy was a welcomed addition to his family as his siblings were teenagers when Tommy was born. His siblings Andrea and late Justin Eagle Child loved and cherished Tommy immensely. He grew up with his cousin, Matthew Minoose who became his brother since they were babies. They were inseparable and Matt became apart of Cyril & Patty’s family. Patty often would say they were raising twins because they were only 6 months apart. They explored and had many adventures in the coulees around Cyril and Patty’s home. Tommy was close to his cousins Lyndon, Ryan, and Terrance. Frances and the late William Many Bears loved Tommy like a son always caring for him and Huxlie. The Eagle Child, Minoose, and Many Bears families travelled all over Canada & United States and enjoyed their camp trips to Silverwood. Cyril and Patty encouraged him in hockey. Tommy started skating for Kainai when he was 6 years old. In the beginning, Tommy was only going to try out being the goalie for one game. After this game, he became the goalie, and his jersey number was #31. So began Tommy’s love for hockey and his favorite team was a Calgary Flames. Cyril and Patty had many adventures as hockey parents driving, participating in hockey games & tournaments. He travelled all over Canada with many of his teammates who were his brothers celebrating many birthdays with them while at Native Provincials or Treaty 7 Provincials as his birthday fell in April. Cyril and Patty brought Tommy to Okanagan Hockey Camp at Penticton, in British Columbia. A super proud moment was when Tommy played for Canadian Tire Blackhawks in Lethbridge and they were Alberta Provincial Championship Bantam “A” in 2004. The Blackhawks had not won a Provincial Championship in 32 years. It was exciting for the team to be the Champions of Alberta.

Tommy became a young dad to Huxlie when he was 21 and devoted his whole life to his cherished son. He made every moment extra special and happy for his son. Tommy’s world was Huxlie and Huxlie’s world was Tommy. His late brother, Justin was proud to become an uncle and Andrea cherishes being an auntie. He really missed his brother Justin. Recently, Tommy was excited as he was selected to bring Huxlie to Disneyland and invited his little brother Bayley, cousin Chic, Ace & Lucas to go along. Tommy spoiled Huxlie and often bought many toys & everything for each birthday Huxlie celebrated. Another funny moment, Tommy being so tall would ride rides with Huxlie; he barely fit in the kiddie rides but nevertheless rode the kiddies ride with his son. The family just laughs when Huxlie’s favorite team is the Edmonton Oilers because the whole Eagle Child Family are die-hard Calgary Flames fans.

Another proud moment, Tommy graduated high school at Catholic Central High School in 2009. He was the first one to graduate. His classmates asked Tommy who was cheering him on as he crossed the stage as he had the loudest cheer amongst a 1000 people. Tommy started school at Standoff Elementary, Cardston Elementary, Junior High and High School and a short time at Kainai High School. In 2011, Tommy was in a work experience program and was going to school to upgrade. He started working nights at Wal Mart in Lethbridge. Recently, he was going to apply for a Security Program in Lethbridge. The team lead said he wanted Tommy to be on his security team upon picking up the application to attended school and meeting Tommy.

Tommy had a quiet presence about him, he cared deeply for his family & friends and was the most-friendliest guy around. His first cousins were his brothers and sisters. He had many, many friends and family from hockey who became his hockey family. Tommy never complained about being a stay-at-home parent as long as Huxlie continues to smile; he tended to Huxlie every need both at home and in hospital. There were many long hospitals stays but he always remained optimistic. Tommy always wore his rosaries wherever he went as he often visited his friends unexpectedly. He loved to cook and would often do all the cooking spoiling Patty so she would not have to cook. Tommy liked to write his thoughts down and helped his dad outside the house. We will miss our gentle, friendly, kind-hearted, Tommy as he soars now with the Eagles’ above.

A Viewing will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Friday, March 19, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and Saturday March 20 from 9:00 – 11:00 am (Due to New COVID regulations, the building will be closed periodically for sanitizing) with a Family Service to follow at 11:00 am.  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anita Maria Florchinger (nee Dolker), in Taber on Monday, March 15, 2021 at the age of 84 years.
Anita is survived by her four children John (Carol) Florchinger of Taber, Walter (Nola) Florchinger of Foremost, Heidi Florchinger of Taber, and Peter (Lori) Florchinger of Calgary. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Anita was born on May 1, 1936 in the small town of Waldprechtweier, Germany, the only child of Karl and Rosa Dolker. After enduring the horrors of living in Nazi occupied Germany during World War II, Anita immigrated to Canada and married her husband Hans Florchinger in February 1958. They settled in the southern Alberta community of Skiff where they operated a small farm, growing grains and raising animals. The Florchinger farm was like a small zoo. There were cows, goats, chickens, geese, rabbits, cats and dogs. Anita’s passions were gardening and baking. The smells of freshly baked breads and pastries filled the farmhouse on Sunday afternoons. Outside, one could get lost in her immense garden, filled with row upon row of flowers and vegetables. After the passing of her husband Hans in 1994, Anita moved to Taber. She once again, found peace and solitude in gardening, transforming her backyard into a vast array of lush flowering vegetation.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Gordon Mackenzie in 1991, her sons Brian Ray Mackenzie in 1968 and Donald Dean Mackenzie in 2017 as well as five of her six siblings.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her daughter Susan (Lon) Redpath and their daughter, Megan (Jay) McMillan; Don’s wife, Judy Mackenzie and their children, Christie (Mike) Archibald and David Mackenzie: and Brian’s daughter, Caroline Mackenzie; eight great-grandchildren, Raygen, Rylee, Nathan, Connor, Lexie and Jesse Archibald and Dane and Chance McMillan; as well as her sister, Josie Williams of Canmore. Upon completing high school, Helen returned to Alberta and married Gordon in 1942. They raised their three children on the family farm in Wrentham. Their door was always open and often an extra family member or friend could be found at the breakfast table. In 1974, they retired to Lethbridge and Helen enjoyed much of the next decade spending as much as she earned in retail jewelry sales. She and Gordon were both very involved in all aspects of the Lethbridge Shrine Club and thoroughly enjoyed the altruism and fellowship the organization provided. In 1982, they made their maiden trip to Mesa, Arizona and by 1986, they were spending half of every year there. These were special years. The following years were spent cheering on her family on the horse show circuit and at the Black Powder Gun Club range.

Helen was fun loving and “game” for anything. She was funny, kind and a hard working person who was liked by all who knew her. She was very much a lady, maintained a strong sense of morality and took pride in all that she did.

Special thanks from the family go to Drs. Janzen, Crawford, Smith and Horne as well as the hardworking caring staff of Garden View Lodge, Sunny South Lodge and St. Therese Villa. A special mention to Heather Schindler, Sierra Proudfoot, Dawn Lapointe and Don Gustam for always going above and beyond.
