What system is really better than our own?

By Letter to the Editor on October 9, 2021.

Editor:
In response to the “Letter to the Editor” on Sept. 30 titled “Capitalist system is unfair and socially unjust” by Ramma Sawhney:
What would she propose as an alternative?
First of all we do not have a totally capitalist society system. If we did there wouldn’t be all of the handouts of money that the government continually gives to all, along with many other freebies from the public at large.
If some people didn’t use the drive they have been gifted with and started a business, we would all be using the barter system, yet there would still be some people living in dire straights. It takes a lot of gumption, hard work and time to start a business and become successful.
As for what a person spends the fruits of their labour on that is their business and for all anyone knows, these billionaires mentioned in Ramma’s letter probably/possibly give a lot of money to various charities.
Other than our present society, other systems such as the Communist only distribute wealth to the top government officials. They, the government own everything – you own nothing.Complain and you go to prison or worse.
I’m sure Ramma Sawhney has a kind heart but isn’t very realistic.
As for Bill Gates who was mentioned in the letter from Ramma “deserving admiration,” one of his very close friends was Jeffrey Epstein who was convicted of sex crimes.
Ramma might want to ask herself why there are tens of thousands of refugees and immigrants coming to Canada and the U.S.A. to escape from non-capitalist economies, i.e. Cuba, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Haiti and the list goes on.
I would suggest that anyone not liking our system of government should go to Russia or China for a year.

I guess all funtioning systems need their well-indoctrinated cheerleaders.

It is true that there is a lot of government largesse, but it goes mainly to corporations that, in turn, grease the wheels of government – a tightly closed economy.

As for refugees, if you look at the Canadian numbers, most come from ‘capitalist democracies’. Unlike the letter writer, I’m not such a jingoist to not acknowledge that names of ‘systems’ can vary in content.

You may be pushing rope uphill here. Data are often not a prerequisite for an opinion. Much research shows that most often when people with deeply-held beliefs are challenged with hardcore empirical countervailing facts, their beliefs actually strengthen. That might not be the case here, but I’m not bettin’ the farm.

yeah, the best…one just needs to overlook: perverted inequality in what people earn for the hours of effort; gerrymandered and corrupt tax “laws” that are designed to suck a ridiculous disproportionate amount from the lesser earners whilst ensuring the uppermost pay little to none at all; the never ending movement of massive amounts of public dollars into the pockets of the uppermost wealthiest via noted tax breaks and various giveaways euphemistically called “grants”, “subsidies”, “incentives”, “exemptions”, “abatements”, “public investment” (from which the public actually gets no equity), and so forth; a system that exists on unsustainable consumption of unlimited wants, and consequent pollution and destruction of the very systems that we need to sustain life on our planet. yes, that aside and this system is truly the very best.
