Zelenskyy must give up something to end war in Ukraine

By Lethbridge Herald on May 6, 2022.

Too much destruction and death of Ukrainian soldiers and innocent civilians has already happened. This ongoing tragedy must stop. Sending weapons to Ukraine is not the answer to making peace – although we must send weaponry as long as the brutal war is on.

NATO is not showing any interest in encouraging negotiations between the Ukrainian President and the mad man, Putin. Ukraine’s best interest lies in finding a way to end the war. It can not be allowed to continue forever; it is destroying the nation.

Zelenskyy must initiate the negotiations himself. Putin has certain demands. That is the starting point.

To achieve peace at least some conditions may have to be met. Putin is a politician; he knows that he can not have his way entirely. However, Zelenskyy has to be prepared to give up something to buy peace. He may have to commit to agree not to join NATO. He may have to give up some territories with a majority of Russian speaking citizens or the regions of Ukraine that have been conquered by the Russian army.

It is of utmost importance not to, at any cost, give up Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.

Let us hope and pray that the suffering of the Ukrainian people ends real soon. It is heart breaking to see all the bloodshed, destruction, the agony of millions of homeless refugees with little, bewildered children following their hapless parents who have no idea about the future of their beloved homeland and their own lives.
