City council needs to address homeless situation better

By Lethbridge Herald on July 30, 2022.

Editor:

As expected, there was approval from our city council to throw another bucket of money at the “homeless” situation and tent encampments.

What are we doing? Mike Fox, Director of Community Services stated that $195,000 of the $230,000 allotted so far is going for wages. This includes cleaning up areas with a recent cleanup resulting in 5,670 kilograms of garbage and 282 needles!

I keep hearing how we have to find housing for these “homeless” people. Fine. If they are there through no fault of their own and are clean and sober, great. The drug addicts that won’t even clean up after themselves? Not on my watch. I’ll give you a little preview of what will happen if you provide these wandering Nomad drug addicts with a decent home to live in: They will destroy it, plain and simple. You can cut this piece out and hang it on your fridge and make me eat my words later if I’m wrong.

They will 100 per cent destroy what is given to them the same way they destroyed the self-cleaning toilet downtown, the same way they throw clothes that were given to them on the streets and sidewalks of Lethbridge because the clothes weren’t good enough for them, I guess.

After they destroy everything, we the taxpayers of Lethbridge will be on the hook again! Stop repeating the same mistakes over and over!

There is only one solution. Either these addicts get clean and sober and start contributing to society or they are not welcome here. If they have a severe mental illness then place them in a long-term facility, get them clean and sober and take care of their needs so they can at least have some kind of decent life.

In the last civic election, my wife and I voted for the mayor and council members based on who we thought would be best suited to get a handle on our continuing drug addiction and crime problems here in Lethbridge. So far, it would appear we are going backward. Disappointing, to say the least.

Don’t hold your breath Doug! This city is full of Bleeding-heart-coddle-masters! First we need to get rid of them then the junkies next. We have been doing this all wrong from the start. Tough-action should be waiting in the Bull-pen!

How many more $millions do we, the taxpayers, have to waste on this matter? They don’t want our help, they don’t want a house in the ‘burbs. Let it go, stop the waste of monies, the ever increasing taxes.
Council, get your collective heads out of the sand. Quit coddling them, and they will move on!
