Freedom Convoy caused economic hardship and grief

By Lethbridge Herald on September 7, 2022.

Editor:

I am appalled at the letter to the editor (Herald Sept. 1) from Jill Skriver who said she supports the convoy hoodlums who in my view if they had been successful in convincing Canadians not to support public health guidelines would have meant a serious blow to the freedom of many Canadians.

There is little freedom in an ICU or a hospital ward. Apparently Jill valued personal trips to California and Kelowna over the safety of Canadians. Let’s face it, these thugs intimidated peaceful citizens in Ottawa, blocked the Ambassador Bridge between Windsor and Detroit causing economic hardship and planned to murder RCMP at the Coutts border to Montana.

The only problem with the Emergencies Act is that it was not used soon enough. Skriver was wrong when she said it was brought in by Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Freeland. It was brought in by a wise Conservative government in 1988. The federal Conservatives have gone downhill since then; even some aspiring to lead the National Party are claiming they always supported the convoy. They are often referred to as the Tory Trump wing.

Hopefully others will write to the parliamentary committee looking into the use of the Emergencies Act with a sane approach.

This is what happens Ken when you let fake conservatives, Reformers get control of Conservative parties. We know these Reform Party fools are nothing like the conservatives we proudly supported under Lougheed and Getty, or they would be collecting proper royalties and taxes and running this province properly like Lougheed did and Alaska and Norway are doing. The hundreds of billions we have lost because of these fools is sickening. It didn’t happen in Norway and Alaska and should never have happened in Alberta.

Yup

Southern Albertan

Again, I guess we’ll find out when some of the freedom convoy leaders stand trial whether they will be charged with sedition for intentions of overthrowing the federal government. Sedition, an indictable offense which can score up to 14 years in jail.

I agree with 100% with your letter! I rarely agree with anything the PM does, but I supported this action completely since there was no camparison to the War Measures Act in the Emergencies Act. Like you, I thought it should have been enacted sooner.
It did show the true colors of many PC’s and now I know who not to support or vote for. It is sad to see a party go that extreme and not recognize a clear threat to democracy and our Canadian beliefs. Parties will do anything it appears to get elected and seeing that they believe/side with the radical extremists connected with the insurrectionists who attempted to overthrow a legally elected govenment in Washington, D.C., should be a wake-up call to all free and law abiding Canadians.
The scary part is that therre were police, fire, EMS, and military also involved, even in freedom protests in Lethbridge!
Canada has a growing white power and domestic extremist problem that has bled from the US and increased in numbers in the past 20 years, dramatically during COVID, as the used it to recruit/increase their ranks.
I am in disbelief the PC’s and some of the UCP supported these groups, but now know that I we face troubling times ahead.
The PM has been writing cheques as if money free and infinite, $25 billion here, $40 billion there, $15 billion for others, trying to buy more votes with his apologies and chegue writing, Have you noticed, whenever he gets caught doing something wrong, he finds someone to apologize to and write cheques to. Has anyone calculated the costs in the last 5 years?
We are facing tough times ahead and seeing unrest growing across this country is not giving me much hope!
I applauded the decision to enact the Emergencies Act and it served it’s purpose and was removed in a timely manner!

I think the “protests” should have been dismantled in days rather than weeks. They were illegal and unconstitutional, Guelph vs Soltys (2009). Since the police were unable or unwilling to do that the EA became necessary as much as I disliked that happening.

I agree however Ottawa didn’t have the man power to do it very quickly and were out numbered badly. The police had to make certain there were no weapons involved that could be used against them. They had to wait for the other provinces to send police help, like they did. The fact that this stupidity has cost federal taxpayers $36 million proves that these stupid reformers praising them aren’t conservatives and Canadians had better wake up and stop supporting them. If Poilievre is elected it will give Canadians another good reason to vote Liberal. the fact is Trudeau, although we don’t like him has been a hero to Albertans.

How about cancelling all government contracts with tow companies unwilling to do their jobs.
