Oil and gas subsidies great for Albertans who own stock porfolios

By Lethbridge Herald on May 24, 2023.

Editor:

Thank you UCP for not only maintaining but also increasing the value of our fossil fuel companies by not requiring them to pay their land leases, municipal taxes or the costs for the clean up of the ongoing pollution of their tailings ponds and orphan wells.

By providing these UCP subsidies, my share prices and stock buybacks have done very, very well. I, among all Albertans who own oil and gas stock portfolios, have benefited from this “trickle down” UCP economic policy of taxpayer support for business and corporations.

I know some people say that all this money would be better spent on reducing hospital wait times, classroom sizes and tuition fees for students. Or by providing low cost housing for seniors, abused women and their children, and the homeless to reduce suffering, poverty, and crime.

But these are all minor inconveniences that Albertans are eager and willing to tolerate. It’s a small price to pay for living in our great, business-friendly environment of the “Alberta Advantage.”  The only environment that really matters. Right?

So thanks UCP. As a result, I’ll be enjoying an all inclusive on a beach in Costa Rica. Oh, P.S., I almost forgot the free 600 Danielle bucks. That’ll pay for a day trip to the cloud forest -transportation, meals, guide – included. Excellent!

From someone who collected a salary for 30 some odd years from one form of taxpayers to another, can’t understand why you are so cynical. The resource industries in this province, whether you call them subsidies or tax deductions have provided an enormous wealth to this province both in the past and will in the future. They have gone a long way to contribute to the educations system costs, benefits and salaries that you enjoyed. The wind and solar crowd wouldn’t exist without real “subsidies” and will provide nothing substantive except higher bills. See Germany and Ontario. Enjoy your ride on the taxpayers dime and at some point wish that you become grateful to all those working through the night to keep your lights and heat on. Watch out for the jelly fish in Costa Rica. Letter is snide. Has more to do with you being prudent and responsible that you can enjoy what you do. PS. Donate your Smith bucks to the soup kitchen. Make a difference.

So anyone who takes the time and trouble to learn about investing in the markets, grows their savings and takes pride in their own achievement over envying the success of others… is greedy and part of the problem?

That’s the problem with these Dippers! They never learn how to appreciate their money. It’s just a full bladder for them. And they always want more, and they always seethe when someone else has more.

So yes, support the political party that encourages the individual’s ability to grow by fostering a provincial business environment in which they can grow. Obviously, not the envy politics of the NDP.

the point is hardly how you choose to twist it. the point of the letter is spot on: the sleaze needs to be outed and honestly addressed.
