Editor,
This was the election of change for a number of reasons. The NDP collapsed, yet through a stroke of luck ended up holding the balance of power. The Bloc disavowed support for Canada as a country in the face of Trump’s threats. The Greens completed their retreat from Canadian politics, although Elizabeth May continues to compete on a personal level. The Conservatives saw a huge polling victory turn into an election loss.
The re-invention of the NDP will be one of the most important things affecting government in the next few years. What direction will a new leader take the party, a party that will have a large impact on which policies the Liberal government can pass? It’s fascinating that Heather McPherson in Edmonton is one of a handful of people that will be making these national-impact decisions.
Jagmeet Singh was an effective parliamentarian, but a terrible leader. He was able to get the polices passed that he wanted to, but failed at inspiring and attracting new voters to his cause. Many thanks for the social programs, Mr. Singh, it was an important accomplishment.
The Conservatives are at a crossroads. Here are three roads they could take from here. They can pivot to the extreme right-wing, like the fascist movement in the United States.
They can take a step to the left and include more people interested in social programs, empathy and compassion, but still wanting to be fiscally responsible. Or, they can split into two groups, as in the old days of the Progressive Conservatives and the Alliance Party. The choice of direction will depend in a large part on whoever is party leader.

And you’re hoping for a split so Nenshi can win.
You really can’t help yourself, huh? I know you’re in Southern Alberta, but it’s not necessary to craft this man out of straw.
Time to move past speaking to others’ motives, yeah?
After four years of the NDP propping up the most useless and spendthrift government in history you still clutch your NDP pearls. And facts matter.
If facts mattered to you, buck, then you would know that the NDP annual expenditures have been exceeded by each subsequent year of UCP ‘management’. (https://www.statista.com/statistics/578911/provincial-government-revenue-and-expenditure-alberta/)
It’s obvious that for some data and facts are not prerequisites for an opinion.
I’ve never voted for the NDP.
Those pearls appear to be firmly within your dirty palms, sir.
So in true Reform Party fashion you are going to ignore the billions of dollars Trudeau poured into the provinces and ignore what the COVID Pandemic has done to the world internationally, like we have learned in our world travels and you aren’t smart enough to do any research on the subject, while you ignore the soon to be $500 billion oil well cleanup mess and the $85 debt these Reformers have dumped in our laps in Alberta and you don’t care? How stupid are you?
Of course you aren’t smart enough to understand what the lawyers are saying that Trudeau . He was a hero for how he handled the COVID pandemic, the oil industry crash of 2014, or the Convoy Trucker Stupidity and we know with these Reformers by praising them you wouldn’t get any help from these fools and Canadians being not as stupid as Albertans knew it and re elected them.
Of course with you being one of dumbest people on the planet, we pity how stupid you really are, and thank you for all the good laughs. You really are a joke.
the ndp lost seats to those voting for the liberals so as not have the fascist wannabe, make canada great again, intolerant, narrow dweebs who camped with pierre.
the ndp lost seats to the cons much because those voters so hated justin and ilk for all the sleaze, and their ndp helped prop up the justin sleaze for too long. hat was the price to be paid for playing politics, which the ndp did very well, resulting in more social programs that serve the whole.
now, pierre gets moved across country to be elected in alberta, and once again we can be made to endure his smarmy, sarcastic, negative, divisive childish antics.
carney will likely prove an adept leader due to his ability to understand the big capitalist picture, and because he can interact in civil and intelligent ways toward creating positive relations.
in 4 years, we will have another liberal led govt, albeit with a dozen or so fewer seats, and with the ndp back to official party status.
meanwhile, our system is a woefully flawed one, as we have too little democracy, too much disparity, and a massive power imbalance between the oligarchs and the masses that think they get to vote for change.
It’s never been a secret that Smith was all about privatizing our healthcare and education systems, her candidates told us so ,and they fully supported it and that’s why when she ran and lost to Allison Redford.
Her new Reform Party Game Plan is to convince stupid Albertans to separate from Canada so they will have no choice but to accept a privatized healthcare and education system, along with a private police force paid for by property owners property taxes. This will allow them to cancel our Canada Pension Plans for seniors who have received a lot more than we ever put into it.
I bet rural Albertans are dumb enough to agree to it after all they constantly reward these Reformers for letting the oil industry pollute their land with abandon oil wells making it virtually worthless when they want to sell it and retire, that’s how stupid they are.
You can bet they will elect Smith’s reform party pal Poilievre the Donald Trump of Canada wannabe. While he tries to pretend Trump is the bad guy , He is so proud of Trump he quotes him word for word in his speeches and showed no respect for the citizens of Ottawa or the $65 million debt they created , during the Convoy Trucker stupidity so they kicked him out and Albertans will certainly let him back in that’s how stupid they are, isn’t it?
So after Pierre Poilievre made such a fool of himself to all Canada pretending Trump was the bad guy yet quoting him word for word in his speeches and proving he was his hero and after showing the citizens of Ottawa no respect while he praised the convoy truckers they kicked him out and Albertans being the fools they are for letting these Reformers treat them like morons and have helped these Reformers cheat them out of $1.2 trillion are now willing to re elect Poilievre and show the rest of Canada how stupid they really are. Where is the intelligence in that?
Obvious from all the naysayers and down voters, I hit the nail on the head. From stupid to dirty pearls. Hilarious. Now you want to dump the connection to the very Federal party you are supporting. Quick ma, which way is the wind blowing today????
Dirty palms, not pearls.
Your reading comprehension is as loathesome as the political party you support.
