Albertans must make their voices heard on separation

All Albertans are subject to the legal treaty agreements made between Alberta’s original peoples and Canadian settlers, who were then subjects of the British Crown. These treaties are not simply historical agreements; under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, the treaty rights of Indigenous peoples are recognized and affirmed as part of the supreme law of Canada, imposing continuing obligations on the Crown and all governments within Canada. Any attempt by the province to unilaterally pursue separation cannot override these constitutionally protected treaty rights, giving Indigenous nations a clear and enforceable basis to oppose such a referendum.
As an Albertan, I applaud Indigenous opposition to the proposed and unlawful Alberta separation referendum. The Indigenous descendants of the signatories to Treaties 6, 7, and 8 are in a uniquely strong position to challenge this initiative and to expose the UCP government’s thinly veiled support for what is clearly an illegal and reckless political maneuver. Your willingness to confront this issue directly is both necessary and commendable.
I urge members of these treaty nations to take a next step by organizing an open-invitation public protest at the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton. Albertans—Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike—would gather to make it unmistakably clear that this dangerous push toward separation does not represent the will of law-abiding Albertans.
Your legal challenge has established that opposition to this referendum rests on firm constitutional and legal ground. A public protest would give all Albertans the opportunity to express that opposition clearly and collectively, and to hold the Smith government answerable for encouraging a divisive and unlawful path toward a separation vote. The Smith government refuses to follow the law. This cannot stand. Albertans opposed to separation must raise their voices loudly enough that they cannot be ignored.

Good observations, but trying telling that to the MAGA – like fawning bunch of far – right acolytes bowing at the altar of the authoritarian ding – bat down south.
Watching these seniors allowing themselves to be treated like morons is sickening isn’t it?
Not all of them are seniors, but they are definitely influenced by their senior relatives how to vote. One of my uncles who was in his 90s when he passed away, several years ago, didn’t support Ralph Klein. I doubt he’d support Danielle Smith. When we were going to a funeral for one of his brothers, who was in his 80s, when he passed away, many years ago, my uncle told me, “Don’t worry, “you’ll be in your 80s one day.” Imagine when these people turn that age, how they will feel, after the UCP took away everything from them, making their lives harder.
My wife discovered yesterday that in keeping with these Reforms plans for privatization of healthcare they will no longer pay for seniors annual eye exams. She was forced to pay $129. It must make these mindless seniors proud knowing how they are being treated like morons, while they are being cheated out of their oil and corporate tax wealth, right?
The UCP and Danielle Smith will tell any lies to get re-elected, won’t they?

While our senior friends who volunteer at the food banks continue to state that they are seeing more and more seniors needing food bank help these mindless seniors supporting them continue to hurl their sarcastic comments at us for not being as stupid as them and allowing them to be treated like morons.
A university professor told me years ago that these seniors are so stupid they will allow these Reformers to put them in financial ruin or in an early grave, , because they can’t get healthcare help when they need it, that’s how stupid they are.
When Klein was closing hospitals and cutting 5,000 nursing positions some of these stupid seniors were telling me that it was wonderful how Klein was kicking out these highly overpaid doctors and nurses to save us billions of dollars. Just too stupid to realize that he was doing it because he no longer had the money to pay them because of what he had done to Lougheed’s oil royalties and corporate taxes.
When they couldn’t get medical help when they needed it they told me that it was the fault of these damn doctors and nurses. They wanted more money and when Klein wouldn’t give it to them they left.
Klein’s own father Phil told me a whole different story. He blamed his son for creating the mess and was very disgusted with him.
Of course these mindless seniors are too stupid to understand it, aren’t they? The seniors in my coffee group certainly do and are as fed up with these seniors as I am, aren’t you?
So 4 of these idiot seniors don’t agree with me. They can’t handle the truth that’s how stupid they are. They see nothing wrong with what these Reformers are doing to our children’s future and they don’t care, that’s how stupid they are, isn’t it?

I agree with you. Now we see Demetrios Nicolaides handing more money for private education in Alberta, while the public education system in Alberta still hasn’t recovered from Ralph Klein’s senseless cuts to it, while the UCP have made matters worse.

I’m disappointed at all the senior bashing on this topic. My wife and I are seniors and certainly do not support the UCP or the separatists. In fact I’m not convinced a majority of seniors in Alberta support either organization. There may be a large number of seniors in each group but that’s in the group not Alberta. I’m also disappointed that any seniors would support the UCP after the disastrous policies of the UCP that directly impacted seniors.
So who do you blame for keeping these fake conservatives in power and allowing them to destroy our children and grandchildren’s future?
Lougheed’s energy minister Bill Dickie was a brother in-law of one of my uncles and I certainly know how the Social Credit and Conservative MLAs I knew felt.
I was a card carrying conservative for 31 years and having known Ralph Klein since we were 17 years old I knew we were in trouble with him as premier and his mother did also.
Flo told my mother that he wasn’t capable of running this province properly and he couldn’t have created a worse financial mess as Lougheed told us.
His father Phil was thoroughly disgusted with him for destroying our health care system , he knew it would cost people their lives and it did. His daughter Angie was urging Albertans to vote NDP to kick her father out she was so disgusted with him.
Having had a conservative membership for 31 years I went to as many Conservative functions as I could , to see what was going on, and who did I see being treated like morons and believing every lie they fed them Stupid Seniors. In every case the gatherings were 80 to 85 % seniors and nothing has changed they are still doing it as my friends and I know. Klein was overheard telling one of his MLAs that “I could tell these stupid seniors anything and they would believe it”. I other words he felt the same way I do.
So if you feel you are being classified as one of them I am sorry that you haven’t been able to figure it out when everyone I know has, so why haven’t you?
