Working to end violence against women

By Letter to the Editor on November 28th, 2020

The statistics prior to the pandemic were stark enough: women experience violence at a rate four times that of men. Within that number, Indigenous women experience violence at rates 2.7 times higher than non-Indigenous women and are three times as likely to experience spousal violence. Transgendered women are nearly two times as likely to experience ... Read More »

A poor way to save $99,000

By Letter to the Editor on November 27th, 2020

Re: the Lethbridge Herald Thursday, Nov. 19, on the City Planning Department’s ridiculous way to save $99,000, for a City that has a budget of tens of millions of dollars. My idea, get rid of a couple of City staff planners, if this is all their brainstorming can come up with to save the City ... Read More »

What Herald provides can’t be replaced

By Letter to the Editor on November 27th, 2020

We’ve been Lethbridge Herald subscribers for 46 years. That’s about 15,650 issues. We were both born and raised here in Lethbridge. We’ve volunteered here, worked here, owned a business here, raised children and are enjoying our grandchildren here. Like thousands of Lethbridge retired folks, we own computers, smartphones, televisions and radios, so we have an ... Read More »

Why does City subsidize developers?

By Letter to the Editor on November 27th, 2020

I read with interest the article regarding cuts to the printed advertising budget as proposed by a City of Lethbridge department. I found the comment about seniors who are unable to access the internet should simply make their way down to city hall to pick up printed details to be just a little ludicrous. What ... Read More »

Be considerate and shovel your sidewalks

By Letter to the Editor on November 26th, 2020

Very few of us like shovelling sidewalks. For civic responsibility and financial reasons you shouldn’t wait for the next chinook. Seniors, moms with strollers, people in wheelchairs, joggers, dog walkers and students depend extensively on safe sidewalks. A brief chat with the City’s Regulatory Services Department confirms it is the property owner who is responsible ... Read More »

Front-yard garbage pickup is a bad idea

By Letter to the Editor on November 26th, 2020

Re: Garbage pickup at front of residential property. We have resided in the Lakeview area of Lethbridge for over 40 years. Our home is in a small cul-de-sac of seven or eight homes and all residents have between one and three vehicles which are regularly parked in front of or near their homes. While our ... Read More »

Carding not the only practice that should end

By Letter to the Editor on November 25th, 2020

With this week’s announcement from the UCP banning carding (which I applaud), my thoughts turn to another infringement on the privacy and rights often perpetuated by law enforcement: the School Resource Officer (SRO) program. It’s time to have a conversation about the role of uniformed and armed police officers in our schools and its impact ... Read More »

City urged to support local newspaper

By Letter to the Editor on November 25th, 2020

Hello Mayor Spearman, You don’t often hear from me but I think you (and council) are doing a fantastic job of leading the city! You have not shied away from difficult decisions for the greater good. I know that’s a thankless task some days, so I want to first say THANK YOU for all you ... Read More »

Too many don’t get mask message

By Letter to the Editor on November 21st, 2020

Too many of us are not wearing masks in public. Alberta has become a hot spot for new corona infections. If people won’t wear a mask and avoid crowding our leaders must make it the law with fines to not do so. Recent Alberta regulations closing bars early are not enough. Heavy fines are in ... Federal app might be better fit for Alberta

By Letter to the Editor on November 21st, 2020

Recently Minister Shandro defended the Alberta COVID-19 tracing app as a tool in the fight against the pandemic. He went on to say that the federal app wasn’t a good fit for our province. Alberta has over 10,000 active cases, and the app has thus far identified just 70 contacts in 19 cases. The federal ... Read More »

Will U.S. follow Germany’s example?

By Letter to the Editor on November 21st, 2020

Trump is gone, but what about “Trumpism”? This question seems of great concern these days. But let us consider some history. Quite recently the world was very worried the defeat of Hitler might not be the end of extreme German nationalism. Yet the German people eventually recognized their gullibility and Germany is now one of ... Read More »
